Presentation Secondary School, Waterford

Mathematics

In Presentation Waterford our objective in the mathematics department is to provide an educational experience that helps prepare students for successful roles in an ever changing society. This is accomplished through the department's commitment to excellent teaching, a well designed curriculum and a supportive environment for all students.

We aim to encourage an understanding of Mathematics that will enable students to achieve in State Examinations and have confidence in their own abilities. Students are challenged to develop skills in analysis, reasoning, creativity and self expression as they gain knowledge of mathematics. We maintain high academic and behavioural expectations and make every effort to direct students to realise their full potential.

Mathematics is a core subject at both junior and senior cycle. The subject is offered at higher, ordinary and foundation levels ensuring all students are well provided for.

In Presentation Waterford, mathematics is taught in mixed ability classes in first year and in second and third year they are taught in classes appropriate to their level.

In Transition Year the subject is taught in modules, some emphasising revision of the more difficult topics from Junior Certificate, others looking forward and whetting the appetite for the Leaving Certificate course.

In fifth and sixth years we offer common curricula at both higher and ordinary level Leaving Certificate. Students are encouraged to opt for Higher Maths, if possible.
